Team bonds

In our research, we interview our client’s employees to find out what makes them decide to stay. The most common #1 positive at work? ‘The people I work with’.

Creating the sense of 'team' and encouraging the positive aspects of work should be a priority for team leaders and managers.

Last week I was talking with an HRD about how she creates a sense of togetherness within their team. In their quarterly team meeting, each person has to present three 'wins' that they have achieved at work during the quarter. All achievements are celebrated by the team and the sense of togetherness is developed. This is a simple initiative but has created a great sense of sharing and team interaction as everyone now really looks forward to this quarterly meeting.

How does your organisation encourage togetherness? How do you celebrate success? We'd love to hear your ideas and experiences for how a sense of 'togetherness' can be created?!

We've had a lot of budget cuts in the last 18 months and team building activities have been frozen. We recently did a staff survey and the overwhelming request was for team bonding activities to come back. We were thrilled because it doesn't cost a lot to put on a BBQ on a Friday afternoon and the feedback we received was that they highly value it.

We had a quarterly team activity at my last job. We went whitewater rafting, go carting, jetboating. It allowed everyone to interact as friends, not just colleagues and that helped us work together.

I used to work in a television company where all the employees had great social events and all the contractors were completely left out. That kind of makes sense normally but these contractors had been there in some cases for years and years. SO we all left to go bowling or whatever and they'd be left there. Not sure what that did for their sense of being valued and the decision to put in a bit of extra effort. I think casuals and contractors should be considered valuable too.
